This movie is about fate, choices, the path we choose, the good and evil in life.
Two droids are bought by Owen, Luke Skywalkers cousin. While cleaning one droid, R2,he holds a secret message from Princess Leia. It shows how nice Skywalker was, cleaning the droid.
The droid escapes, and Skywalker sets out to find him.
Luke learns during this mission, that his father was a Jedi, and killed by Darth Vader.
Luke tries not to get involved, but trains for battle. Wouldn't you train for battle against the evil? In todays day and times, we do not go to battle. We call the law enforcement and they fight the evil in this world.
Luke is the hero in this movie, he uses the force to blow up the death star.
He met lots of friends along the way, Leia, Han Solo.
The main story is the rebels, the good guys against the republic, the evil guys.
Good versus evil, do we not experience that today, in many different forms?
In some ways this movie reminds me of WWII. To them they were fighting for a cause, causing great destruction and battle between the forces.
Although in todays world, we have laws and jails, I am sure how you can see the fight between forces can still happen between counties

Star Wars

I have never watched any of the Star Wars movies until this class. I have never been a person to get into the movies. But two of the things I thought I got out of the movie was making choices and the path we choose for yourself. I choose these two things to talk about because making choices is a big thing in life. If you cannot making choices then you are kind of not going to really get or do anything. Choices are a big deal. The last one is the path we choose for yourself. There are many paths that you can choose you just have to know the right one for yourself. I had to choose what path I wanted to do when I got out of high school and I had to think if it was the right one for me and I believe I chose the right one.

Past Meet Future

The Star Wars series of movies have a lot of entertainment value to them but I find the technology aspect the most interesting. In the 1970’s when the movies were created there were not any computers or video games. Little was known about traveling in space yet Star Wars depicts a setting that is far advanced then the technology available during that decade.

C-3PO is called a droid in Star Wars. He does everything for his master. It’s as if Luke has a huge personal cell phone in the form of a robot. We all depend on our droid or IPhone. I wonder if the inventor of the droid cell phone was a Star Wars fan. During the scenes involving the planes shooting at each other, I felt like I was sitting in an old arcade game. The interesting thing is that the movie was created during a time were video games were not around. It’s so weird how things from the past correlate with our current life and we often fail to make the connection.

Han-Solo makes a reference to getting the ship up to faster than light speed when traveling around space and to different planets. This is discussed in the Universe as well. One of the barriers to traveling to Mars is the time it would take to get there. Han-Solo has this figured out in Star Wars. Even though Star Wars is a completely fictional story, does it contribute at all to where we are today relative to technology and space travel? What do you think?

                               

The Star Wars Bond

I have always loved the Star Wars movies. When I was little my older brother and I would watch them together almost every weekend. He loved the robots and the technology of the movie. I, much younger than him, loved the funny sounds that everything made and the pretty light sabers. He loved Han Solo and Chewbacca the rebellious and lovable bachelors and I loved Luke Skywalker the cute and determined young learner. However, this movie with many different meanings brought my brother and I closer together. It has undertones of religion and love as well as the main points of war and the life of Skywalker. I have loved this movie since the time I was a kid and I don't think that will ever change.

Star Wars: Together for a Purpose

"She is so beautiful. I wonder who she is."  These are clear and distinct words that Luke Skywalker says when he is presented with a hologram of Princess Leia.  This hologram shown by R2-D2 is the foundation of the film. R2-D2 shows Luke and C-3PO that Princess Leia has been held hostage and needs help.
The words are an aspect of the film that I find compelling because they set the tone/mood in the film. First, Luke sees a woman in distress. As he sees a woman in distress, it triggers a signal in his brain to take action. The said action pushes him to be somebody great. This action will then help him identify who he is as an individual.
These words are an aspect of the film that I again find compelling because Luke doesn't know that he and Princess Leia are siblings; twins as a matter of fact. He sees this woman as beautiful and is eager to know who she is. In the film you see them working together to escape from Darth Vader in the Death Star. As the film ends, they both smile at one another. The smile is a representation of a strong connection between two people.
Another aspect of the film I found compelling was the bond that Luke Skywalker and Han Solo shared together when blasting the battle cruisers (bad guys) out of sight. This bond is compelling because it brings about two unlikely people that share a common goal. Even though the two men seemed to be an unlikely pair, they realized that in order to accomplish their goals, they had to work as a team to get what they wanted.

“THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE”

The aspects of Star Wars:  A New Hope that I found compelling were the humanness of the characters whether human or not, the battle between good and evil, and the strength of the musical score.  Star Wars is the story of human beings and other life forms living in a fictional Universe where many planets are inhabited and traveling from one to another is only a matter of hopping on a transport or space shuttle. After watching the episodes of The Universe about someday living on Mars, I thought this film brought the idea to life. But in Star Wars, the characters can breathe the air and move around without space suits. Some planets have lush green landscapes and others are barren deserts.  Each planet is just another dwelling place and each alien race is just another species in the galaxy.

A strong friendship develops between the characters, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia as they fight against Darth Vader and the evil Empire.  Friendships also develop between these three and an old Jedi named Obi-Won Kenobi, a Wookiee, and two droids.  In the film, there is great loyalty between these characters, both human and not.  They risk their lives for one another and work together to defeat evil.

Good against evil is a strong theme throughout the film.  The Force is the underlying binding spiritual power that governs the Universe.  The Force is strong in certain individuals and they must choose whether to use their gifts for good or evil.  The Force is strong within Luke Skywalker and he chooses to begin his training as a Jedi Knight with the help of Obi-Wan Kenobi in order to fulfill his destiny. Many in the Empire don’t believe in the Force but even the evil Darth Vader knows its strength.

Finally, as a musician, I truly appreciate the musical score.  The orchestral music is powerful and memorable.  All you need to hear are the first few lines to know it’s the Star Wars Theme.   The music strengthens the anticipation, the drama, and the eventual triumph of good over evil.

A Future World at a Drive-In Movie

The clunky speaker hung from the driver’s side window.  That, now famous score, played as we viewers read, “. . . in a galaxy far, far away . . .”  I will never forget the first time I saw Star Wars.  I was just a kid and my Mother had taken me to the drive-in theater.  It was a special night, just the two of us.  The popcorn bucket was full and smelled fantastic.  It was dark in the car as I looked out at the vehicles parked around us.  The place was packed.  Other kids my age and adults alike; people were everywhere, sitting on blankets in the beds of pickup trucks or on the hoods of cars.  It was like a giant outdoor living room with everyone trying to find the best seat.  Not knowing at the time, but we were all about to take a wild adventure through space with George Lucas at the helm.  Besides a slight crush on Luke Skywalker, I walked away from the experience with a love for the movie.  I remember the slew of toys and games that came out with the release of the movie.  I had C-3PO and R2-D2; and everyone loved Chewbacca.  I know I am dating myself, but it was a great time! 

 

Through the years, the sequels have graced screens around the world.  The fans of Star Wars are tried and true.  What I find so interesting on a scientific level, are the many parallels between the movie Star Wars and The Universe episodes I just watched.  The underground dwellings, traveling at the speed of light, humans on other planets and robots or droids being programmed to do much of the work.  The attention to detail paid while creating Star Wars was amazing.  Something I had an appreciation for when I was a child, but didn’t understand why.  It is that detail, I believe, that has kept the movie goes coming back for more.   There is a reason Star Wars stands the test of time.  In Sci-fi Adventure, it’s a classic!
