Blog #12: The Crucible and A Jury of Her Peers

Select either The Crucible or A Jury of Her Peers. Then, using one close reading of a single passage or scene, answer the following question:

How does the text characterize the relationship between individual and social identity?

This prompt is broad on purpose so that you have enough flexibility to write about something that interests you. It is also the prompt for your final essay, though for that essay you will have more options in terms of text/film selection. Your argument must not be broad. Instead, you should focus on something very specific—a character, a relationship, a scene—that will help you develop an argument about these two kinds of identity. For example, you might want to analyze how one aspect of a character’s personal identity clashes with the persona that he/she embodies in social situations, or you might want to explain how social interaction helps to craft an aspect of a character’s perceived identity. The goal here is to be as specific as possible and to use your close reading to substantiate your argument.
