Danish-Do

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The movie that awakened a whole new throng of geeks that worship IV-VI and many who despite I-III. This movie was huge when it came out. And is it any wonder why? This movie was and is great. It’s full of all kinds of awesome special effects that may be a little goofy by today’s standards but are still fun to watch! There’s no CGI in it either, everything was constructed or was a prop. My brother and dad are rather large fans of this series thus this wasn’t the first time I’ve seen Episode IV. It’s also probably not the last either. When I see this movie, I just get a flood of different associations in my head.
As I stated, my family really likes these movies. The first movie to come out, Episode IV, in particular has significant meaning to us. Why is this? My family’s from Philly. My dad used to work for a movie theater as an usher. This movie ran for a really long time there. My dad says that he got to the point the he was able to leave the theater for any given amount of time and be able to gauge where the movie would be when he returned. He jokes that he used to be able to say how many times the band in “Billy’s Bar” (the nickname we give the Space Bar since the movie shows us a sign that’s in an Alien language) repeats their silly song as well as how many times a little light blinks in some scenes. As I watched this movie, these stories were going through my head.

Another big story that my dad likes to talk about, one that makes watching Princess Leia kind of funny, when some of the actors went to the theater he worked at for a promotional thing. My dad had been instructed to kind of “stay with” Carrie Fisher (Leia). He was told to basically go to lunch with her. Fisher really wanted a BigMac, thus they went to McDonalds together. He was kind of fanboying, but even when he was a teen he was probably more tactful than that. He had told her that he really liked the Danish-Do upon which she rolled her eyes and laughed. So, basically, every time I see Princess Leia, the “Leia” that my dad talks about come to mind and I just laugh. Also, R2D2 was really just a guy in a painted trashcan. This series is nostalgic for me and made watching it even easier.

Film poster showing Luke Skywalker triumphantly holding a lightsaber in the air, a Princess Leia sitting beside him, and R2-D2 and C3PO staring at them. A figure of the head of Darth Vader and the Death Star with several starships heading towards it are shown in the background. Atop the image is the text "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." Below is shown the film's logo, above the credits and the production details.

  1. I love your title and how it relates to Leia’s hairstyle. It is great that you father had those stories about this movie. I found them to be entertaining. I can understand how it made watching the film a little easier, especially since all the stories were running through your head. Your title definitely caught my attention and was completely relevant to your post. You certainly grasped and kept my attention to read through the whole thing. It was a great read, good job.
