The Star Wars series of movies have
a lot of entertainment value to them but I find the technology aspect the most
interesting. In the 1970’s when the movies were created there were not any computers
or video games. Little was known about traveling in space yet Star Wars depicts
a setting that is far advanced then the technology available during that
decade.
C-3PO is called a droid in Star
Wars. He does everything for his master. It’s as if Luke has a huge personal
cell phone in the form of a robot. We all depend on our droid or IPhone. I
wonder if the inventor of the droid cell phone was a Star Wars fan. During the
scenes involving the planes shooting at each other, I felt like I was sitting
in an old arcade game. The interesting thing is that the movie was created
during a time were video games were not around. It’s so weird how things from
the past correlate with our current life and we often fail to make the
connection.
Han-Solo makes a reference to
getting the ship up to faster than light speed when traveling around space and
to different planets. This is discussed in the Universe as well. One of the
barriers to traveling to Mars is the time it would take to get there. Han-Solo
has this figured out in Star Wars. Even though Star Wars is a completely
fictional story, does it contribute at all to where we are today relative to
technology and space travel? What do you think?
I agree that Star Wars was way ahead of its time. To have a movie based on science fiction and technology still be relevant after almost forty years, is amazing. I remember my father talking about playing Pac Man and Asteroids at the arcade when he was young. Now we have all sorts of advanced gaming systems, computers and the internet. When I watch Star Wars, it stills seems futuristic not out dated. It really stands the test of time.
ReplyDeleteI can not agree more that star was way ahead of its time. It set the standards for all movies that were to come out during that time frame. I like that you put in there about technology that Luke had , like his cell phone. I feel as the makers of star was new that technology would one day run the world. Therefore why not make a movie will technology that will one day be used by millions. Over all you did a great on this post.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as the opening seen played in this movie I was shocked in the amount of technology that this movie was showing. Being that it was made back in 1977 it is amazing that they were able to do all of this. You make the point that it's funny how things in the past correlate with things in the future now. Maybe someday this is what our world would look like who really knows. I’ve only seen New Hope and it really makes me wonder how the technology is going to advance and become better to make this film seem more and more realistic.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree Star Wars was a very advanced movie to be made in the late 1970's. It was made at a time where space travel on earth still a popular topic whereas now it is kinda in the background. I think it has been not talked about so much now mainly because the cost of anyone traveling into space is so high.
ReplyDeleteWhile watching the film it was interesting to see how advanced the director wanted things in the movie to be. Like the complex space crafts and space stations were. It must have taken alot of imagination to put that all together.
I especially thought the "bar scene" was interesting. There were all different creatures interacting with umans and they were speaking different languages but all of them seems to be able to understand one another. It was common ground for eveyone except fortor the Droids that they would not serve there.
I enjoyed this post.
