Extrovert in the Making: It's a Learning Process

According to loved ones, I am observant, talkative, creative, and social. I make friends easily and believe to be the center of attention. While being in college, I have learned that personalities can change depending on the environment. One example is stage fright. I love to sing, but every time I perform, my legs shake and quiver, and my brain loses it's thought process. I feel nervous. Performing on stage makes me nervous because I am afraid of forgetting the lyrics, stepping out of rhythm, or losing my voice. If either of these things were to occur, I would be utterly humiliated. I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I forgot the lyrics to the song I was singing. Even though I feel nervous when singing, I continue to think of the task at hand. While remembering the words and listening to the piano play, I tell myself I am no quitter; therefore, I never give up. When in a learning environment, I am determined, open-minded, and eager. I always participate in class by raising my hand, asking and answering questions, and giving feedback to others. In a group, I tend to be the leader and focus on completing the task on time. I listen to what others say and provide each member a role in order to maintain accuracy and equilibrium. My personality is outgoing. Because my personality is outgoing, I am able to stay focused when learning. A learning environment surrounded by people helps me to stay active and contribute to class participation. I feel obligated to show others my intelligence. As an active learner, if the information being taught isn't interesting or I am alone in a room all by myself, I become bored and distracted. Personality and learning go hand in hand because you can't understand one without the other. Whether I am an extrovert or introvert, both personalities help each other when in a learning environment.

  1. When you have to take from both personalities in a situation, do you ever feel the two clash or conflict? For example, when you are in the classroom surrounded by your peers participating in class and speaking, do you get nervous or see your introvert side emerge? I love the video, by the way. It completely reminds me of myself.

  2. It sounds like you're a good balance of the two personalities. You do fine in an academic setting, taking control of the situation if needed and participating. You even have the courage to make it to the stage or in front of a group, but it sounds like the nerves set in at that point. Is that because of a larger group than a classroom or is it because they are strangers and not only classmates? Good read.

  3. I agree with you that the environment has a lot to do with how one reacts to certain situations. I find that when I am with my peers, I am an extrovert. When I’m alone I am more introverted. I think anyone can seem like an extrovert when they are placed in an environment where they are comfortable.
I loved the video you posted. I have been in situations where I have felt that way. Luckily, I have never been that bad. When I had to give speeches in front of a classroom of people I did not know too well I was extremely nervous.
