The Challenge of Discovery

Of the three formalized points on the personality spectrum, I believe I fit best as an extrovert. This is not to say do not acted as an introvert when I feel it is appropriate.  In addition to reading Quiet, I watched Susan Cain's TED talk about the same topic. It really hit me when she spoke about the styles of leadership that come from introverts and extroverts.  When I find myself in a leadership position, I will take into account that extroverts tend to "put their own stamp on someone's ideas."  In retrospect, I can recall times where that has been true and I hope to be more fair when those situations come around again.  The best way for me to learn and solve problems is to compile different thought processes to form a logical, practical solution.  That is not possible if I continue to make my own rendition of someone else's ideas.
Her talk allowed me to open up my mind to assess my own personality characteristics.  In the closing remarks of her TED talk, she asks for us to think about what is in our "suitcase."  Her suitcase was filled with meaningful books, but after some thought I realized I don't know what items I could feel good about putting in my suitcase.  Sure I have hobbies, but I thrive off of experiences, not possessions.  Learning comes naturally for me when I can sense how the teacher explains something, where he or she is in the room, and especially when they make connections to previous material.  All of those learning styles feed off of the professors energy.  Now comes the test of taking my first online class, being this one.  That is how I discovered I am an extroverted learner.

  1. It’s interesting to read about an Extrovert, especially since so many of the others in this class think of themselves more as Introverts. You mentioned how you may have placed your name on something when it wasn’t yours to claim: you probably were not aware of what you were doing, based off of how you can look back at it with a feeling of, “Oh fudge-guppie, I was one of those people!” Honestly, sometimes Introverts (at least in my case) like for others to take credit for them because compliments or attention just distresses them. I was also very intrigued by your description on how you best learn. I liked your use of ‘energy,’ it made me thing on the lines of ghosts and the like. Online courses are not so bad, as long as you don’t forget you have one!

  2. I like that you incorporated TED talk into your blog, it added more credibility to your determination. I can relate to never having taken an online course before, and the challenge that it presents. I also agree with the comment on the professors energy, i find this to be true a lot of the time with my classes. The comment about the "suitcase" from the TED talk video, I especially liked the most out of the whole blog post. I did not personally recognize anything that could have been altered or re-worded in your post, I enjoyed it.
