In a world of her own

The scene starts out with Merab and Sonya pounding on Rees front door. The door swings open and Ree comes out with a shotgun ready to shoot them for what they have done to her. She immediately jumps down there throat as to why they are there. Merab and Sonya are trying to convince Ree to come with them and that they have something to show her. Ree is very weary and dosen’t want to go with but she ends up going to with them. Even though Ree has no idea where she is going she knows this is the only way that she is going to be able to keep her house. Ree is the leader in the household and had learned this throughout time that she need to be rock in the house since her mother is no longer a functioning person. The scene now directs itself to Ree getting out of a car blind folded and she is then prompted by Merab that she may know where she is at and that if she does she better not remember it. The Merab, Sonya and Ree all get in a canoe and go down the stream to a certain point. Merab tells Ree that her dad’s body is right in front of them and for her to just reach in a grab his arm. Ree hesitates for a bit wondering if this is the right thing to do and then she reaches in searching around for her father’s hand. She reaches around for a bit but eventually finds it and pulls his hand out of the water. Merab tells her to take the saw and cut his hand off for the police. Ree objects and says “no”. Merab follows up by saying “your daddy would want you too”. Sonya interjects “she can’t do it Merab”. Merab then tells Ree “to hold his arm out straight child”. Merab takes the chainsaw and slowly cuts threw the arm as Ree is holding his arm in shock with her mouth wide open. I believe that this seen shows how committed she is to her family and that she has learned this through the type of environment that she grew up in. That she needed to defend and do everything for her family or they wouldn't last.

  1. The scene you chose to talk about does stand out and shows the strength Ree has to have for her family. I would really like to hear more about your personal thoughts on Ree's character not just in that one scene because she is a very complex person because of the life she lives. Something that stood out to be is how Ree's Dad and the Dolly family is involved in cooking meth but Ree doesn't get wrapped up in that life showing strength.
You can see in Ree's face she is very fearful in the scene you wrote about I like you described how she looked when his hands were being cut off. Good job I enjoyed reading what you wrote!

  2. This scene is absolutely one that is memorable. Ree displays her courage and undying devotion to her family. This is a scene that captures something that no person should ever have to face, but alas, Ree is willing to do anything to protect her family. I completely agree with you, she has had to learn how to persevere through obstacles that would send most people into complete hysterics. I would love to know exactly what was going through her mind at that moment, I only fear that she was in complete shock. Overall, it really made me look at my own life and count my blessings to have the life that I do.

  3. I like that you wrote about this scene because it is so intense and powerful. I agree that Ree shows that she is willing to do anything to save her family. Also, I may be the only one that thinks this, but I see compassion in Thump’s wife Merab and her sisters. Although they beat her, it seems that they did it to save her. When the men arrive after the beating, Merab tells Teardrop that no man touched her. The family has a code and Ree’s father broke it by snitching. Ree keeps the family’s secrets and their code. When Merab and her sisters come to take Ree to her father’s body, they are giving her the opportunity to prove that he is dead. With this proof, she can keep her home. Their compassion for her can also be seen when Merab cuts off the hands because Ree is in shock. Merab also calls her “child.”

  4. I believe the scene that you chose was a good one to write about because it does show her love for her family by wanting to protect them. I think you described the scene in very good detail. I only a couple minor typos but other than that it was a well written blog entry. I agree with Caroline on the fact that the family seems to have a code that they stick to. (well almost everybody). But you are right with the fact you can tell that Ree is willing to do anything for her family and you can tell her devotion to them.
