Ree's Responsibilities

The scene I chose is when Thump's wife and her sister show up on Ree's front porch and tell her that she needs to go with them to find her father's bones. This scene is prefaced with the scene in which she is beaten by these same two women, where towards the end she tells them her story of why she needs to know that her daddy is dead. She used her story and what she goes through, how that would change and how much more her family and her would suffer if they didn't help her. Of course in this scene no one helps her. But, the sisters come to her aid after. I think the women hear her need and understand that she needs this in order to support a family that she has no other choice but to support. Though the women are helping her for their own gain and Ree's they give her what she needs to show the Sheriff and get back her house and land and even a little extra money that her father's 'friend' had put down for his bond. Ree is an amazing girl and she loves her family more than anything. She took a beating and searched for days to find the information she needed to survive. Ree is smart, intuitive, and clever in getting the information that she needs out of anyone.

  1. Why does Trump's wife and her sister need Ree to help them find Jessup's bones? I know that I would not want to help anyone that beat me, even if there was a chance of forgiveness. I also did not see how the women would benefit of finding Jessup's bone, as their land is not affected by his bond. However, Ree is determined to find her father on her own, as she promises the sheriff that she will find her father alive and save her family. Ree should know the risks of being a meth maker since this is not the first time Jessup has been accused of making an illegal substance. If you were caught or even suspected of dealing and/or making illegal substances, the biggest risk was being killed by the head honcho of the operations. Or did Jessup's "friend" set him up to be killed and the family suffer for some personal mean?

  2. I also don't see how the women would benefit from taking Ree to her father's body. I think the women were proud to have beaten her. They announced that to her uncle when he came to get her after the beating had taken place. I think it was their way of getting further revenge on Ree. It was like they were torturing her when they made her hold his arms while they used the chainsaw to cut them off. They knew she wouldn't be able to cut his arms off herself so rather than not make her do it and get no satisfaction from her suffering, they made her hold his arms so they could get some satisfaction out of seeing her suffer. This was their way of making Ree pay for her father's mistakes.
