Not Anytime Soon

The most irritating thing to me that I found while watching The Universe was the commercials. I could have done without them. Other than that, I think the discussion about getting to Mars was a bit crazy. Right now it could take four to six months to get to Mars. If we want to go there we need  to find a quicker way. According to the video, we would have to find a way to travel faster than the speed of light to get there in any reasonable amount of time. How is this possible? I realize that scientist have accomplished so much but to me, this seems to be an unrealistic expectation. Funding for this project and any research for that matter is difficult to obtain. I am not sure about you, but I have a hard time in a flight across the United States. I can't imagine being contained in a spacecraft for months at a time. I doubt we'll see travel to Mars anytime soon. Since there is nothing there yet why would anyone want to go? Humans are so accustomed to life on earth. Probably there would be major mental health issues for people while they adjust to such a different environment. Travel to Mars, maybe someday but not anytime soon.

  1. I have also taken a cross-country flight, and I feel your pain. They're rough. The human population on Mars would not be very happy. The lack of resources on Mars would not contribute to a sustainable civilization. The problems we face on Earth today will always take priority over interstellar expeditions. I also do not think we will ever give enough funding to space projects. If I had to ride a space shuttle for six months to an uninhabited planet, I would still go. There is nothing built on Mars yet, but somebody has to start it, and I would want to help to save the human race.

  2. I personally never experienced a cross-country flight, but I have heard some things about it. For example, the body experiences pressure as the plane is ascending and descending (ears particularly). Four to six months does seem like a long time to get to Mars, but before vehicles existed, it took months to travel to a different state. I think the idea of traveling faster than the speed of light seems impossible because humans have not been able to create a spacecraft that can handle moving that fast in a short period of time. One thing is certain, we have been able to identify the speed of life itself, and that is a good start. Possibly in our life time we may not see Mars as fully capable of being colonized but maybe our great-great-great-great grandchildren will, who knows? Would you be willing to travel to Mars?

  3. I have flown cross country once and it wasn't fun at all. I also agree with you that humans would most likely develop more problems than originally anticipated. Earth is a perfect environment to thrive on while mars would most likely lack something we desperately need. Even if this is not the case we would definitely still struggle.

  4. I think that travel to Mars is a complete waste of money. I feel like instead of dumping all of this money into researching other planets, we should use that money to fix the problems we have here on Earth. If we can fix some of the problems here then we won't even have to risk all of the potential problems that will arise from moving to another planet.

  5. In your post I believe that you hit on a lot of good things and the actuality of being able to go to mars. I believe that funding is a very big thing for traveling anywhere. Why should we be spading millions and millions of dollars on learning about other planets when in my opinion there are more important things that need to be handled on planet earth? Why are we trying to learn more about another planet when we are still trying to learn ours? You hit on the issue of mental health I never even thought about this becoming a problem. This is not only a thing when it comes to being in a shuttle for that long but also when you are up there that far away from earth who knows what could develop.
