The Red Planet
I enjoyed watching the Living in The Universe video. Personally I love movies and there are so many movies about living on or exploring other planets in our solar system. But I never knew that scientists at NASA had already made robot prototypes and Biosphere 2 as self sustaining environment that people could live in on Mars. Already there has been a lot of in depth thought behind relocating humans onto another planet.
I do think the thought of living on Mars is exciting, but would be dangerous and in a way terrifying. For example in the video, when people living in the Biosphere 2 were acting unfavorably due to a lack of oxygen because the cement used to build it wasn't cured properly. On earth this problem is easy to fix, but if this were to happen to a self sustaining environment on Mars it could be very fatal.
Starvation would constantly be a danger when living on mars, because Mar's soil is unable to support plant life. Also transporting food, water, oxygen to Mars would be expensive and inconvenient. So humans living on Mars would need to be trained how to grow their food. One concern I was wondering about is if there would be a wide variety of foods?, so that there isn't any nutrient deficiencies.
Obviously at first if this were to ever happen we couldn't just put any regular person on Mars. It would be highly trained scientists that would live there first. Living on Mars would be difficult for many people I feel, because boredom outside of the daily routines would be hard to deal with everyday, you can't just go outside without a special space suit. Even then there surface of Mars is dry and dead looking.
What this video really made me realize mostly, is Earth is the most fascinating and beautiful planet that has so much life on it. We need to put more thought into how we can preserve our way of life on Earth so we aren't someday forced to find another planet to live on because of overpopulation or we ruined Earth with pollution. But the universe is never ending and there is so much we can learn.
I agree that Earth is the most fascinating and beautiful planet. Mars seems interesting but it is barren with extreme temperatures and in order to live on it, we would have to always be in some type of temperature and pressure regulated shelter, suit, or machine. On Earth, we can live out in the open and breathe the air. We have such freedom that we wouldn’t have on a planet like Mars. Earth is a kaleidoscope of color, texture and beauty. Mars is red. But our resources aren’t unlimited. We really do need to put more thought and effort into preserving our Earth.
