The Price of Life

The episode I found most intriguing was 'Colonizing Space.'  The episode talked about how precious life is and how important it is for us to find a new place for us to live on in case anything were to happen to our planet.  The thought of life being too precious to have it so in danger on just one planet makes sense.  What I don't agree with in this episode is the thought that moving to Mars would actually be considered sustained life.  It is a 6 month journey when earth and mars are on the same side of the sun in which time your body will lose significant bone mass due to lack of gravity.  Then when you get there you can only withstand the cold temperatures and environment by wearing a space suit.  Life on earth is precious to us because of what we get to experience outside with the breeze, plants growing, animals, etc.  Is it still life if you can't do those things? It seems to me like it's almost like going against nature for us to make a planet habitable when it clearly is not.  The planet at one point had water because of the shown erosion on the surface and may of at one point had life on it but if there is no longer life there why does it still seem like a good idea for us to force it.

  1. See, I'm torn between understanding the importance of fate and agreeing with the significance of life. I think fate is definitely a component of life that is necessary, and if anything were to happen to Earth as a whole (or even half), it is out of our control. I also understand how important life is, however. I think it would be wonderful to have the option to go to Mars if anything were to occur to affect the wellbeing and liveable conditions of Earth, but it would also be most appropriate to have the option to go down with Earth as a captain would go down with his or hers.
