The" Living Space" in Space

I chose the " Living In Space" video to write about in this blog.  The reason why Mars was chosen as the most ideal colony for the future was interesting.  It seemed to be the one most like earth and had resources for energy such as the frozen water that could be used for rocket fuel to energize the colony.

Dome like structures would be used to house the colony.  One large dome with surrounding connected smaller domes.  These structures could easily with stand the cold and radiation from the outside world. The planet consists of gritty sand.   People who travel there for a colony may miss the grass, trees, blue sky.  What they would gain by living there would be a red sky and winds.  I myself would miss the openness of the earth and being confined to the small living quarters of the dome.

I found watching the trial run at Biosphere 2 interesting.  Scientists created a desert, wet lands, grass lands, tropical forrest, and a mini ocean.  However, due to lack of oxygen, they experiment was compromised.  They discovered it was due to lack of curred cement in the walls.  If this happen on Mars people would have died!

I feel anyone who considers this journey sometime in the future would be very brave.  The trip to get there alone takes six months.  Then you have to live in a confined space, have figure out a way to grow your own food sources in an artificial greenhouse, and to explore outside the dome is very risky!  The end of the video made an impression on me by stating our neighbors on Mars wouldn't be little green people they would be us.

  1. I understand that it would be very difficult to do. But, our civilization should be moving forward technology wise and spreading out. Our planet is overpopulated and if an answer to that problem is to colonize mars, then I'm glad that the scientists are trying this out. It would be difficult for the colonists trying this out but they know that it is very beneficial to the human race and that they are going somewhere that no human has been before.

  2. I think trying to live in space is a waste of money. Yes, there are resources that we could use and I think that is great. Let's just do what we have to do to utilize the resource. Moving there? That sounds crazy! Yes, our planet maybe be over populated, but I think there are cheaper alternatives to fixing that problem rather than trying to move to a different planet. What makes them think we won't have the same problems up there? Besides that, in the Sex in Space episode, they talked about mutations in mice offspring that were conceived and born in space. If there are problems with mice, there will most likely be problems with humans. Today, people have problems with pregnant women smoking because they are knowingly harming their baby, isn't reproducing in space kind of along the same lines? We know there is a chance that the babies may be born with mutations and we've seen it happen in mice. Why risk that when we don't have to?

  3. I think that you are on point when you say someone who wants to travel to space must be very brave. I, for one, would not ever even consider a journey of this magnitude. The craziest vacation I ever plan on taking might be to like Fiji or Italy, certainly not Mars. I am someone who enjoys the beauty of our amazing planet. I do however think that if we do not start to change our ways, the Earth will not last too horribly long. I think that there are ways to fix this, I believe if we all come together we can save our planet. I know if it came down to the Earth exploding or moving to mars... I would go down with this ship. Earth is my home and I will not abandon it for anything!
