A Vivid Painting with Words

A free write on writing.   There are many things that inspire me to write, however, writing for the sake of writing is one thing, to write with purpose and/or understanding for the reader, quite another.  I guess the theme that intrigues me the most so far this semester is the overall writing itself.  "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking" with its analysis of personalities, "Winter Bone" with its horrific mystery and realistic characters, and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" with the paralleling world to we Muggles but consisting of broomsticks, potions and magic:  all very interesting and moving in their own right.  By weaving those characters, ideas and personalities together with my own, sparks new thoughts that transport me to areas of my mind that needed some dusting off, and even perhaps, experiencing for the first time:  that's the joy and adventure of writing.

The challenge is to tie together the assignments given, my own imagination and the polishing disciplines that coincide with writing so others understand what I want to say.

To see a cloudless cobalt sky on a warm summer day . . .
To hear the dry autumn leaves rustle in the woods on a sunny fall afternoon . . .
To feel the cool crisp early winter breeze brush your face as you quicken your step and push  your hands deep into your pockets . . .

If the writer has done what they set out to do, you will hear what they hear, you will feel what they feel, and you will see the world that they see.  The final product and hope is a vivid painting with words.

  1. “Painting with words,” sounds so beautiful. I admire people who can write and make us feel what they feel and see what they see. I paint better with paint! Writing is hard for me. I have to stop and organize my thoughts then try to put them in to words on a blank page. Then I don’t like what I originally wrote and have to revise it again and sometimes, again. If I am timed and given a random topic, my brain freezes and I can’t think at all. I can create with my hands, what I want to say. My art and music allow others to feel what I feel and see what I see like a vivid painting that you create with words.
