Understanding Me (Freewriting)

At the beginning of this course, I read the first 60-70 pages of Quiet as instructed for our first blog post.  After doing that, I did something I've hardly ever done before (outside of a field that interests me).  I went back to the book and kept reading.  As soon as I started Quiet, I felt a...connection?  The stories and examples in the book made perfect sense to me and explained me better than I ever could.  This theme slightly intrigued me.  I always knew of introverts and extroverts, but never considered where I would place myself on such a scale. The further I read, I more I understood why I have a need to get away from everything so often.  I understood why I am more comfortable deep in the woods or coding a program, instead of at my friends' parties or at the mall.  I can say that I'm more comfortable with myself after being exposed to this book.  I think this was a great book to start the semester with - it truly makes us open our minds for the rest of the course.

  1. I really liked what you said here. I feel like I too experienced the same thing reading the book. I too am a introvert and I too enjoy being alone or just getting away from everything for a longer time than others would. However, there really nothing wrong with this and it is actually something that helps me in some ways rather than others which is why this book really is a good read.

  2. I also learned so much from Quiet. The most important thing that I learned is that it is all right to be yourself. I am very quiet, shy, and introverted. I always thought this was something that I needed to overcome, like there was something wrong with me. I now believe that I am OK just as I am. I have many strengths that would not exist if I was always talking and was out going. I don’t really like big parties either. I would rather spend time alone or with close friends and family. I like that you felt a connection to the book and kept reading when you didn’t have to. Society gives such a different message about who we are supposed to be. Quiet opened a door for many of us.

  3. Quiet definitely shed light on some things that I was concerned about growing up. I didn’t understand why I needed to get away so often from people, especially seeing how often others enjoyed to spend their free time in groups. Even when I held a part-time job in high school, I did not mind working, and generally wasn’t exhausted from the work itself, but I was in need of a mental break because I spent 6 or more hours socializing to customers or other staff members. I can also agree that I’d much prefer going to a more solitude place like the woods rather than the mall.
