OKCupid, Match.com, Facebook, Yik Yak, and Twitter have brought people together for a couple of years. Each website has their own way of making people become closer with each other but they do not force the people to share everything. OKCupid and Match.com are dating sites that allow people to browse potential boyfriends and girlfriends. They also allow users to see other people's profiles to see if they are somewhat compatible before going into that awkward moment of there is nothing to say. These dating sites give people the chance to reach out and see who they get along with, and they do not require that users fill out all of the questions on their profile.
Facebook and Twitter are social networking sites that also allow users to view other's profiles and request to "friend" or "follow." Facebook has brought long lost friends and family members together, making bonds tighter and friendships grow. However, Facebook should not be the source of critical information, such as marriages, deaths, and other major live events. This site allowed everyone to believe it is okay to share everything and not have repercussions. Twitter is like Facebook, but it is not as focused on sharing pictures or videos. Twitter focuses on following people that believe in the same things and think the same way that others do. Facebook and Twitter bring like people together and shows the similarities between people that believe that they are on opposite sides of the spectrum.
Yik Yak is an anonymous social site where people can post statuses and not get in trouble via Facebook moderators or peers. Yik Yak does bring people together by having intellectual and controversial conversations without being exposed. This site allows everyone to speak what is on their mind, obtain advice from unbiased parties, and rant about common problems.
Social media sites bring people together, lets them know that it is okay to say what is on one's mind, to not be afraid of what people think, to show that there are other thinkers and doers just like them, and there does not have to be a barrier forming friendships with the other users.
It is very true that dating sites allow individuals to skip questions if they feel the questions do not apply to them or feel uncomfortable answering at that time. Dating sites and other social sites like Facebook allow people to express who they are as individuals. I never even heard of Yik Yak until I read your post. Because Yik Yak is anonymous, do you think individuals who communicate on the site feel upset or angry if somebody doesn't like what he/she wrote? I like the title you named your post. With social networking, bursting a bubble can be a disturbance to one's personal intimacy. By using social networking to communicate, we need to respect the rights of others and be considerate of their feelings.
ReplyDeleteDating sites like Match.com and OKCupid give the people an opportunity to fake themselves and give false information about themselves to make them seem more appealing to others. A simple example is how a man lies about his height. I wouldn’t ever use a dating site to find a girlfriend because I would rather take the natural route and meet them in person. Facebook and Twitter allow people to hide behind their monitors and spread hate. Even though can be used as a great source of communication and interaction, they also have their downsides. The social media I dislike the most is YikYak. The ability to spread hate and not face any consequences is too easy on this social media app.
