My generation is so involved in technology that we can not go to the restroom without our phones, IPads, IPods, and handheld gaming systems. We sit in front of the television or computer screens for unbroken hours watching animated shows and subscribing to people who make entertaining videos. We stare at our smartphones awaiting the next text message or reading out friends' Facebook walls. This and future generations don't write letters or call on the telephone anymore. As Neil Postman says, news programs are not to educate the people or reflect on what has happened, but to entertain the viewers (Location 1555, sorry I have the kindle version, and I can't find the page numbers).
The recent generations don't appreciate the "old' ways of learning since they have been raised on technology and not reading a printed book or asking parents to tell them something. I learned how to do math with the Hooked on Math program and to read with Hooked on Phonics and Golden Books, which is reading the printed word, having my parents talk me through my assignments and help me sound out words - the spoken word. After growing up with technology, I can see the benefits and consequences of how it has affected society. I always feel that the Terminator franchise will come to reality because we have pushed and relied on technology too far. Neil Postman describes how we used televisions as bookcases and educational purposes (Location 1490) - reading and listening to the news. The start of our civilization relied purely on speech, and now we only rely on artificial intelligence to learn new facts and subjects. All we use television for is to escape the real world as over half the programs are animated or of impossible feats.
I most certainly do agree that people spend way too much time on their cell phones and with technology. I, myself, am trying to pull myself away from my phone and Facebook more. But, I do see the benefit in having the devices. I have an iPad and I do so much reading on it. I don't see how reading on an iPad is any different than reading a book except for the paper and the binding. I also own a laptop which is where I do all of my school work. I do use it for things like Netflix and Facebook, but as long as I limit my time on those websites I don't see my laptop as being a detriment to my social life or my academic life. I get my work done and I go out and actually speak with people too. I'm going to be a Nurse one day. You wouldn't imagine the amazing advances we have made in medical technology. Sure some of them are a little crazy but an IV pump or a computer documentation system...I think that those simple technologies give us nurses a HUGE benefit and a lovely save on our time.
ReplyDeleteI think back when I did not have a computer. Things were more difficult and less convenient. We are way too attached to our devices and need to realize this. I do like Facebook because I can stay connected to people that I might otherwise not be. People can say what they want about technology but it is inevitable that it will continue to grow and change so we may as well embrace it.
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing to me to see how much time people spend with technology; and completely fall to pieces if they do not have it! It is interesting for me to read your post, and enjoyed it very much, as I was NOT raised in the technology generation and the printed word, in a book, is how I learned. I have a huge appreciation for technology, don't get me wrong. I love my phone, laptop, etc., but there are days when I wish it was not quite so easy to reach me.
ReplyDeleteYou put a lot of good work into this blog post. I cannot agree more that our generation is, so involved in technology that we cannot go to the restroom without our phones, IPads, IPods, and handheld gaming systems. Our generation sits in front of televisions and computer screens way too much. There is a lost love for the outdoors, or at least that’s how it looks. It’s at the point where kids our age are addicted to their phones, much like a druggy dealer is addicted to their drugs. Writing letters is a dying thing, but I still feel as people still use telephones.
ReplyDeleteI do agree our generation is real caught up with technology. Even some of the older generations are really deep into it too. I think if used for the right reasons and at certain technology can be good. I'm thankful to have a cell phone in case I need to reach someone for an emergency and I'm not at home. Or I'm super thankful to have the internet to help with assignments and don't have to dig in books like older generations had to do. I think if we used our technology for more of the right reasons there wouldn't be as many negative comments about the matter.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that our generation today is caught up in the technology. I agree with people can not go to the bathroom with out there cellphone or iPad. I think some technology is over used. Something I believe we could use for the right reasons. I believe something we spend to much time on the technology when there is other things out there.
ReplyDeleteI did not like reading this book, but that does not mean that you aren’t correct. People do spend far too much time on their cell phones and what have you. Children are taught by Uncle TV and Aunt Computer more than they are by books and their parents. But there’s another aspect to all of this that we need to remember: choice. No one is forcing you to play on your phone at every waking moment. No one is forcing you to plop your children down in front of a Disney movie. No one is forcing you to play Bioshock for 8 hours strait (which I am totally guilty of!). I’m going to quote the game I just mentioned: “We all make choices, but in the end, our choices make us.” I hope you don’t feel like I’m attacking you, because I really am not! I’m guilty of the 3-hour Tumblr scrolling as much as the next college student, but Tumblr didn’t hold a gun to my head to go on it. Oh, and brownie points for the T1000 picture!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you completely that Terminator technology can and will happen someday. We are a world that revolves around technology making our loves and the easiest. It is a sad thing to say but I think that our world is only going to become more and more lazier as the generations go on. Cause we are advancing more and more every year in technology whether it be a new technology for a smart phone or whether your car can now park it on self. I believe that we as society involve ourselves to much with technology but I don’t think that it is our own faults because this is now the world that we live in and it is how it works.
