In part one of Amusing Ourselves to Death, The Peek-a-Boo World. Postman explains how, today, the information that we receive from our everyday news inspires us to only make opinions and doesn't motivate us to really take action, or expand our knowledge. "How often does it occur that information provided you on morning radio or television, or in the morning newspaper, causes you to alter your plans for the day, or to take some action you would not otherwise have taken, or provides insight into some problem you are required to solve? Most of our daily news is inert, consisting of information that gives us something to talk about but cannot lead to any meaningful action" (Page 68).
This quote reminded me of a discussion I had the other day with my father. We were watching the news and I notice that today the news is just full of many events that are shortened and dished out to the public with no meaning. When are we ever really told a story on the news and are encourage to make a difference? Like one of last night's news stories was about the increasing consumption of fast food and poor food habits that can cause serious health problems. This is a very real problem today and how it was addressed never provided a solution to this problem and I doubt it caused anybody to make a life change to be healthier. I don't think technology is the problem today. It is the way people think and act. People allow technology to control their lives instead of using it to benefit them. So many people sit mindlessly watching TV, going on social networks because it is a way of finding entertainment and ignoring what is important everyday. We have unlimited information today and we limit ourselves by doing nothing with it.
Your post was motivational in a way. Isn’t that a crazy thought? We’ve become so comfortable to just allow the world to unfold around us without taking any actions towards what we’re passionate about. I think media is to blame, but not exactly in a negative light. We see people taking action on our passions, and we think: yeah, this is being done, it’s great, and I agree with it, so I don’t actually have to help out. It’s not that we don’t want to help out, however, but media can more or less demotivate us to act.
