How do you look at a photograph? Are you more focused on the color schemes that are seen throughout or are you more interested in the object that is being focused? Photographs capture moments that are important in a person's life. They hold emotions and actions that are meant to be seen with the naked eye. With photographs, it's hard to understand the information that is being expressed. For example, one individual may feel happy and warm when she sees a picture of a sunset; on the other hand, another individual may feel angry because the presence of a sunset indicates the ending of the day.
According to Postman, "how often does it occur that information provided you on morning radio or television, or in the morning newspaper, causes you to alter your plans for the day, or to take some action you would not otherwise have taken, or provides insight into some problem you are required to solve" (68). The process of information that has changed in society is discussed in chapter five. Letters, newspapers, magazines, and television are just a few examples society has used to process information. Each type of "telegraphy" grabs the attention of viewers/readers and provides them with information about the world. However society views the information that is processed, that information is being spread through communication. As a society, how do we contribute the information that is being processed? Society processes information all the time. We read the newspaper or watch the news to find out about the weather or crime that takes place. We read magazines to catch up on the celebrities, and we listen to the radio for music that has been popular among the ages. Chapter five caught my attention because the world is effected by telegraphy. Without telegraphy, our knowledge of the world would be dull and boring. Our world would have no photographs to capture life's magical moments.
Very nice detail. You made very good point that I never realized when I was reading the chapter. You have made me look at it at a totally different angle. I enjoyed reading your post, once again you have very good detail.
ReplyDeleteThis is written very well. You do into great detail, but not too much. It made me step back and rethink about how I portrayed that chapter. Well done!
ReplyDeleteI like how you stated that without telegraphy the world would be dull and boring and that is 100% true, you changed my view on telegraphy because I never fully realized how we rely on it so much, tv, newspapers, magazines, picture, etc.. Your are right with out any of that, we would have no entertainment and wouldn't know what's going on in the world. Very well stated!
ReplyDeleteI love how this post is organized! The fact that so many people, including myself for that matter, do in fact make decisions based off of reading whats publicized on television or in the newspaper or a magazine, shines so much light on both the relevance and the truth of this post.
