On the outside looking in
Rubeus Hagrid is a bit of an introvert that lives with his dog Fang on the outskirts of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry grounds. He is the Gamekeeper and keeper of keys at Hogwarts. We discover in this first book that Hagrid is someone that takes great pride in his work at Hogwarts and is very loyal to Dumbledore. He has a big heart, especially for Harry Potter and becomes the best of friends with Harry, Ron and Hermione, however, there is something different about Hagrid that sets him apart from the rest of the wizards at Hogwarts. Although Dumbledore says that he trusts Hagrid with his life and puts Hagrid in charge of taking care of the most dangerous of tasks and looks after the foulest of creatures, Hagrid is not allowed to practice magic. It would appear, that Hagrid is a wizard living on the outside looking in. But is he really?

I like how you chose Hagrid for your essay. He is one of the most favorite characters in the series, but he is still seen as a secondary character because he is not caught up in the action like Harry and his friends. What about Hagrid's magical exile peaked your curiosity? Is your argument how Hagrid is like an outcast or does he have his fingers in many pies? Hagrid makes few appearances in the book--as it is centered around Harry Potter and not Rubeus Hagrid--but can you tell us how Hagrid uses a certain personality trait that gets him need-to-know information?
ReplyDeleteYour thesis statement has very good details. You can tells how he is different from the other wizards.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds interesting...Makes me want to read more. I love Hagrid in the book. He is such a sweet and loving character. I couldn’t help but feel bad for him when he was tricked with the dragon egg. I too wondered why he was so highly regarded but forbidden to practice magic. That really doesn't make sense to me either. I want to know what he could have done that he was not trusted to preform magic. His physical description does not match his personality. It was comical how he was driving Harry’s uncle a little nuts with the letters.
ReplyDeleteIt looks as though your essay will be well put together. Hagrid was really Harry's first friend. He was the one who came on Harry's birthday and finally let him read the letter and told him the truth about this parents. Throughout the entire series, Hagrid was the one Harry and his friends went to to talk or get advice. Hagrid does play such a large role, but is shown so little.
