Independence

My favorite theme so far this semester came from Winter’s Bone. Although there were several themes that I took away from this movie, I had to choose one. It was a difficult choice between family, the power of voice, poverty, growing up, and independence. Of the five different themes that I picked up on, independence is my favorite. I love how independent Ree was. She took care of her younger siblings and her mother. She did was she had to do to keep her house from being taken away. If Ree hadn’t been so independent, her family would have lost their home and would have probably been split up from one another.

Independence is a huge part of my life. Growing up, I was always taught not to rely on anyone else. I was told to finish school, get a good education, and eventually get a job and be able to support myself. I work two jobs and I am a full time student. I am paying for my own education and I think that is a huge part of being taught independence. I feel that by having to pay for my education, I hold the key to my future. I am going to try to be the best that I can be because if I’m not, it is going to cost me money in the long run. I also feel that I am independent because I do not live with my parents and I pay my own bills. I know that I can ask my dad for help whenever I need it and he will be there for me, but a part of me thinks that by seeking his help I am showing weakness. I am thankful that my dad has taught me how to be independent. I feel that I am more responsible and I have a better understanding of what life is really going to be like when I’m completely out on my own.
