Winter's Bone is the first movie that I watched in composition two class. Ree Dolly is a significant character, so I believe it is important to look at her personalities and what her actions were.
At first she came across to me as a very shy person that did not speak to people much. After she finds out what happened to her dad, then I realize she is not so shy. I found that she can go and try to solve the problem that will happen if she does not find her father.
I think we can often confuse or associate quiet people with shy. I would agree that Ree could be initially perceived as shy, but if she were shy, she would not have been able to find her father. She had to approach family, neighbors, law enforcement in order to get the information about her father. I think Ree is very resourceful in the movie. I believe her personality is a result of living a very difficult life. She has a hardened exterior because she has assumed so much responsibility at such a young age. If she were shy, I think it would have been unlikely that she would have been able to find out what happened to her dad.
ReplyDeleteWould you consider Ree Dolly to be more of an introvert or extrovert? Because Ree seemed so shy at the beginning of the film, do you think it was more so related to a metaphor for the future story line or was it due to the facial gestures and body language she was portraying? I think it is good that you are using Ree Dolly for your writing prompt. She is a 17 year old girl who is living a double life. She is a girl who has teenager tendencies that are hidden in the film because her care-giving environment is more of a concern.
ReplyDeleteI've also chosen to focus on Ree. I agree completely with your thesis and have a similar idea in mine as well. Her family is definitely her number 1 goal and she would do anything for them. Even if that means stepping out of her comfort zone and speaking up! I think she had such a tough attitude because she had no other choice and had to be the head of the house at such a young age.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting how quiet and shy people do get looked at different then compared to loud and outgoing personalities. People don't think quiet and shy people could be able to stand up for themselves and go all out in a situation like Ree's. It's amazing the courage and braviory people can get when it comes to a certain situation and Ree definitely proved that in this movie, that even though she may be shy and quiet, she can fight for what she needs too.
ReplyDeleteI agree that when I was first watching the movie I thought of Ree to be shy. But, as the movie progressed I also saw her to be more of a go-getter so to speak in regards to her initiative to find out where her father was and trying to prevent the house from being foreclosed. I feel you have a strong thesis statement that you should be able to easily support in your essay. The only thing I had a question on is whether you think Ree is more introvert or extrovert? Overall sounds like you will have a well written essay!
