The chapter that I choose to read
was chapter 2: Media as Epistemology. In this chapter it talks a lot about the
truth either behind what is written and also what is spoken of. Epistemology is
a complex and usually opaque subject concerned with the origins and nature of
knowledge (pg. 17). In this chapter the author is trying to say that we as the
American people believe in too much what we see on TV whether it be completely
true or completely factual. We have just accepted the truth for face value and
we don't question it. Now we also don't use things like we did back in the days
we would read newspapers and books to get the actually factually information.
Also the author says that we tend to believe what people speak rather then what
they write. In this chapter he is trying to say that we as a society rely too
much on what are media tells us and we don’t challenge it even if we question
it ourselves. As we progress more in life technology is becoming more a part of
our lives then the actually factual things like book and things like that.
I think the thing that the author is missing is the fact that knowledge does not only come from books. We live in an age where we learn in so many different ways many of them involving technology. Teachers do not only teach by a book especially not anymore. I do agree with him thinking that we take things from the way they look and we don't dig much deeper to find out if it is in fact the truth. I do think society would benefit from a slower pace where we get more time to enjoy the simple things like books and newspapers.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the author, that most of our information comes from television or the computer and that most people consider it to be factual or the truth. People do not read books for information as often as before, because they can easily find information out from the media. Like you said, we don't try to challenge it and that is probably because we realize that media has become powerful and most people just believe the information coming from it anyways.
