Unforgettably Clumsy
Have you ever climbed up or down the stairs and fell? Have you ever tripped over your own two feet? Do you feel embarrassed or shy because you know people are watching you make a fool of yourself? You are not alone; Neville Longbottom just knows how you feel. He is renown for getting into ridiculous situations that somehow ruin his pristine figure. Hogwarts is a place where wizards and witches learn skills to be the best that they can be. From casting spells to purifying potions, the school of learning is never ending or dull. Unfortunately for Neville Longbottom, he can't do anything without causing harm to himself or others. Neville is an important character in Harry Potter because he strives to be a better person. He is shy and timid, and yet stands up for what he believes in. His weakness (natural klutz) however, provokes him to work hard and to think fast. Yes Neville has a hard time remembering things, yes he is pressured by others, and yes he is gullible; therefore, why he ends up in the hospital so much. Even though these particular events occur in his life, they are what make him stand out from others. His unlucky grace and determination provide him opportunities to overcome his fears. His weakness is a symbol for progression. His weakness is a symbol for progression because you see him grow as a character throughout the book. Neville was an individual that stayed behind the curtain and watched everyone else take a turn in the spotlight. As he realized that being alone wasn't what he wanted, he broke out of habit, and the beginnings of a strong new character were coming to be. Neville is a force to be reckoned with and no one wants to take a hit at him. Neville Longbottom is a hard-working and caring individual who wants to be liked. Being a klutz comes naturally, but defining who one is as an individual takes a lifetime.

I am doing Neville for the first essay, but I never thought his weakness could be his strength. I used his new found courage throughout the book to show that being an introvert is not bad and can be more beneficial than being an extrovert. I really enjoy your e-card because I am also accident-prone, but I have learned to laugh at myself since it could happen to anybody. I know he does not play a big role in the series until book four, but how do you feel about him as a secondary character in book one? Why did you choose to discuss Neville for this week's blog?
ReplyDeleteI love how this is written. It is crazy how sometimes your weakness ends up being a strength. Neville is one of my favorite characters because I can really relate to his clumsiness. My nickname is "Grace" because I am not graceful at all. I haven't found a way to turn it into a strength yet though. :)
ReplyDeleteNeville is one of my favorite characters throughout the series because of the clear change in his character from beginning to end. In the books he goes from being one of the shy kids who seems to do everything wrong to one of the main characters to help with fight against Voldemort as the series progresses. I like to think that this is not only a theme that is in a magical book but in real life (maybe a little less life or death decisions) but I think going through grade school and graduating high school your character and personality can grow and change and you can really choose to define yourself just as Neville did. Do you think that Neville would have defined himself the way he did without the influence of Harry, Hermione, and Ron?
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post. Especially the opening sentence, it grabs your attention. I think bringing Neville to the forefront fits in very well with what we have been reading so far especially in the book Quiet. Neville seems to be an introvert at the beginning but I think with the influence of good friends, he gains confidence and comes out of his shell a bit.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the e-card as well. I can relate as could most any of us when you fall or become clumsy in front of others it can be embarrassing but it happens to all of us at one time or another.
I think Nevelle was influenced in a positive way by Hermione , Ron , and Harry.
